Prom season is right around the corner, and the team at Rumors is so excited. In past years, award season has played an influential role on hair and beauty trends for prom goers, and 2016 is no different! Celebrity locks are often the inspiration that strikes not only the prom attendee, but also their hair stylist. Based on the most recent red carpet function, The Golden Globes, Rumors is anticipating some tried-and-true looks as well as some new hair trends that our clients can expect to see on the dance floor.
Timeless Elegance: Various prom hair trends have come and gone throughout the years, but only one has persevered and remained constant, and that's the classic up-do. If something ain't broke, why fix it, right? This traditional style is one of the safer options for a client to request, but is also chic and beautiful. That's why several starlets kept it simple at The Globes this year.
Kirsten Dunst's slick twist comes to mind. Her style exuded a simple elegance with little details (the braid wrapped around the base) that helped to highlight her beauty. She perfectly combined the laidback style of a messy bun and the ageless beauty of a chic up-do to achieve a look that is relaxed, but fun.
Rachel McAdams' detailed 'do is another beautiful style we saw this year. The volume seen from the front isn't so much that it distracts from the boldness of her lip color, and it only helped to showcase the gorgeous braiding and twisting seen from behind.
Choosing "Sides": Shifting to the side adds a little bit of variation to the basic up-do, without sacrificing the simplicity of the style. Several of Hollywood's leading ladies gave it a try at this year's Globes.
Golden Globe winner Kate Winslet tamed her tresses with a tight twist. By slicking her curled mane to one side, she was able to show off her hair and of her accessories.
Laverne Cox was the picture of beauty, thanks in part to her flawless hairstyle. Her sidelined bun included some gorgeous curl detailing. That, coupled with the pieces pulled to frame her face, complemented her bone structure perfectly.
Unlike her fellow side 'do sisters, Cate Blanchett chose to forego the curls. However, she was still able to capture a look of complete radiance with a mock-bob pinned to one side. Her style was a simple, yet unique way to make a bold statement.
Blast From the Past: Another popular trend on this year's red carpet was a salute to past hair styles. Some popular faces were seen bringing back styles from previous decades, and even centuries.
Lady Gaga's voluminous and bold blowout was reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour. Her nod to the 1940s paired perfectly with her dress and accessories. And with her Golden Globe win!
As usual, Katy Perry made a strong statement. Her larger-than-life beehive hairstyle was a throwback to the '60s that perfectly matched her bubbly personality.
Rooney Mara took us way back this year with a plaited 'do that had a very Greco-Roman vibe. Thanks to the texture and the doubling, Rooney bravely livened up a basic braid. She took her style to the next level, whilst taking us back several thousand years.
"Blow" Them Away: A simple blow out can is an easy way to achieve several different looks, depending on the client's desired end result. As we've already seen, Lady Gaga rocked a blowout with tons of volume. Here are some other women who rocked the blow out in very different ways.
Ms. Amy Adams' blow out was one that focused on over the top elegance. She targeted her style on fabulous curls that are a staple on any red carpet. The center part in her hair was a perfect accent to the volume of her red carpet curls.
For a more natural look than Amy's, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley went for simple, beachy waves. These natural-looking waves were the perfect style for her mid lengthed locks. Bonus: Rumors is proud to carry Moroccan Oil, the product RHW uses to achieve her effortless red carpet looks. Ask for it during your appointment!
The always fabulous J-Lo went for a third different blow out style with her big bend. This potentially overly casual style was turned into red carpet glamour with great volume and bold makeup and accessories.
All That "Glitters": One of the newer trends Rumors is expecting to see is the return of hair accessories and bling. What's great about this trend is that it can be done with an up-do or with a blow out. Based on several styles seen on the red carpet this year, it's best to keep it simple with your jewels and makeup if you choose to accessorize your hair.
Jenna Dewan-Tatum stole the show from her handsome husband with a gorgeously jeweled clip incorporated into her already beautiful up-do.
Saoirse Ronan also accessorized her hair, but in a different way than Jenna. With a straightened style, she used a golden wrap to not only add some fun, but also to add volume to a hair style that usually falls flat.
On the "Straight" and Narrow: This style probably speaks for itself. As we've seen from Saoirse Ronan, straight hair styles were another go to look for several stars at The Globes this year.
Gina Rodriguez looked stunning with her slick and straight style. By pulling her hair away from her face, she called attention to her gorgeous makeup and earrings.
Bryce Dallas Howard's smoothed locks enabled her to show off the gorgeous gown she wore. Bryce's straightened mane with a deep side part is a great and different way of styling a normally difficult to manage length.
Short and Sassy: Ladies with short hair often complain to us that they don't know how to style their locks for an event like prom. However, Hollywood has no shortage of short haired starlets. Several of these women showed how easy it can be by styling their length-deprived locks in beautiful ways.
The gorgeous Jaimie Alexander was positively radiant and rocked her short hair by giving it a boost. Her voluminous finger curls immitated an up-do without the need for long locks.
Short haired red carpet looks often steer clear of curl, as it shortens already short hair. However, Maggie Gyllenhaal took a brave risk in curling her hair. She took a boyish length and turned into a glamourous red carpet look with a lot of body and texture.
Congratulations to Taraji P. Henson! Not only on her Golden Globe win, but on her positively phenomenal red carpet style. She took a different road than Maggie with a semi straight style that lacked nothing. With just the right amount of volume, Taraji gives the illusion of longer hair without sacrificing texture.
These trends are only a few you can expect to see at prom this year. When deciding on how you want to style your hair, it's important to keep in mind your accessories and dress. However, the most important thing to remember is that this is supposed to be a fun night. We know how hectic it can get. Hair, makeup, pictures... It's almost like getting ready for an awards ceremony. Let the team at Rumors help make it as easy as possible. Here are some of the styles we have created!
